Dr. Liz Eich
Liz Eich is a Laboratory Coordinator Assistant in the Biochemistry and Cell Biology Department and Lecturer with The Cain Project in Engineering and Professional Communication at Rice University.
 
Dr. Eich received her B.S. in Biochemistry and Genetics from Texas A&M University and her
Ph. D. in Biochemistry/Cell Biology from Rice University.
 
She has worked with students one-on-one and in large class settings to improve their understanding of laboratory research practices and communication of their scientific goals. Dr. Eich teaches a section of BIOS 115: Freshman Seminar in Local Biology, where students explore local research through discussion of the rationale, methods, and conclusions of a journal article published by a Rice research lab followed by a reception with the authors and lab tour.

Dr. Mary Purugganan
Mary Purugganan is an instructor in the Cain Project in Engineering and Professional Communication where she teaches and collaborates with instructors in the Natural Sciences.  
 
Dr. Purugganan received her B.S. in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University, her Ph.D. in Biochemistry/Cell Biology from Rice University, and studied as a Cancer Reseach Institute Postdoctoral Fellow at Baylor College of Medicine.
 
Dr. Purugganan’s research interests include visual communication in the biosciences, data representation, and learning through discussion groups.  She is currently conducting a research study of how data are selected and transformed for publication.  She also trains and leads discussion leaders for BIOS 201: Introductory Biology and is studying how learning through discussion affects mastery and retention of course material.
