Practical Applications

Biology

Hemodialysis: In this process blood is removed from the body and cleaned. Extra fluids and waste diffuse from the blood stream into the dialysate, a fluid used to clean the blood. The doctor can control the chemical properties of the dialysate, which consequently affects the amount of solute that is transferred.

Energy

Polymer Electrolyte Membrance (PEM) Fuel Cells: These are electrochemical devices that use hydrogen and oxygen to produce energy. Hydrogen gas diffuses from a gas stream through an anode gas layer to a catalyst layer. The Hydrogen is oxidized and the end result is water and electricity. These fuel cells are being designed to replace the internal combustion engine in automobiles because there are no harmful pollutants.

Catalysts

The diffusion of the reactants to the catalyst surface is one of the first steps in a reaction. Next, the reactants must diffuse in the catalyst pores. As the rate of reaction increases, the importance of the pore diffusion increases.
