ASME SOLAR SPLASH

The SOLAR SPLASH is a program involving the design, construction, competition and exhibition of a solar powered ,single passenger boat. The power source is from a limited supply of batteries. Once at competition, only solar power can be used to recharge the Batteries. SOLAR SPLASH has been established to promote interest in science and technology, education and personal interactive skills. Established for collegians, it gives students an opportunity to apply theory to a practical project in a team environment. The SOLAR SPLASH itself serves as an opportunity for students to compete and showcase their accomplishments.
The contest is preceded by qualifying tests, safety examinations,
and examinations of the power train design. This is followed by three major
competitive events: a slalom
to check maneuverability, a 300 meter sprint for speed, and a four hour endurance
test for duability. It is a very good exercise in teamwork between mechanical
and electrical engineering students. Rice has participated in this project only
one year with extraordinarily good results.
