DATA FILES

A NOTE ABOUT OTHER DATA SETS

For your research paper, you will need to find a data set (assuming if you do not want to use the data set for the class). An excellent source of data is the General Social Survey (GSS). You can find all years of the GSS at the University of Michigan social science data web site (ICPSR).

To get the variables you want from the ICPSR website:

Go to http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/GSS/

  1. Click on "Mnemonic"
  2. Find a variable you want and click on it.
  3. From the new box that pops up, click on "Pick Variable."
  4. A results box will pop up telling you it added the variable.
  5. Close results box.
  6. Repeat selection process until you have all the variables you want.
  7. To make sure your file has the variables you want, click on "Pick List" at any time.
  8. When you have the variables you wants, click on "extract".
  9. Select all SPSS options.
  10. When you open your downloaded file, you have to unzip it and then run the spss program that opens up when you open the file.
  11. To run the program, highlight that syntax and run it by clicking on the arrow next to the binoculars. It will run, and you will not see data for a while because you are downloading thousands of cases (this takes sometime to finish)
