Mr. Loden has also performed with the Broadway productions of Cabaret, Once Upon a Mattress, High Society and The Lion King. His other musical theater credits include Arena Stage’s production of Candide in Washington, D.C., a featured performance in Dracula: A Musical Nightmare at Houston’s Alley Theatre, and concertmaster for Houston’s Hobby Center productions of The Producers and Brigadoon. He has also represented the United States on two string quartet tours of the United Kingdom and Norway, and on orchestral tours of Japan and Brazil.
Mr. Loden was President and founder of SONYC (String Orchestra of New York City), an innovative ensemble of 22 professional musicians who perform without a conductor. SONYC has received numerous grants and recognition as a result of outreach programs in the New York City, Park City and Orem, Utah school districts. The ensemble has been the orchestra-in-residence at the Sundance Resort, artists-in-residence at the Lotos Club in Manhattan, and was also the subject of an award-wining film documentary, Breathing Together, which traces the orchestra’s New York City debut concert preparations. SONYC has premiered numerous works for string orchestra, including Christopher Theofanidis’ Visions and Miracles and Prophecies by Menachem Zur, and has been called “…a rarity among instrumental ensembles…” by Robert Spano, Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
As Artistic Director for Young Audiences of Houston, Mr. Loden continued his commitment to arts education by helping to bring over 1,500 annual events into Houston area schools. He managed all aspects of artistic programming for a roster of 100 artists and ensembles, designed performances, workshops and residency programs, and created innovative arts partnerships with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Stages Repertory Theatre, and the Museum of Health and Medical Science. Additionally, Mr. Loden developed a radio program targeting elementary school listeners on KUHF’s FUNdamentally Classic series and designed a series of teacher-training workshops to more fully integrate the arts into classroom curriculum.
Mr. Loden maintains a private studio and continues to be committed to teaching. He has frequently taught and performed at Musik im Kontext, a German-sponsored festival in Istanbul, Turkey, and has also been a clinician in numerous Suzuki workshops in Texas and the Northeast. He was a faculty member at the prestigious Ellington School for the Arts in Washington, D. C., and at the Third Street Settlement School in New York City. Mr. Loden has also been on the violin faculty at the American Festival for the Arts, and administered the chamber music program for the Texas Music Festival at the University of Houston.
Mr. Loden currently enjoys an active career as a performer and teacher in Houston, Texas, and is the Director of Music Admissions at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.
