Chapter 20:
1. 2nd para. Sec. 20-5: The first two lines of the para should be altered from “Consider first the illumination system shown at the top of Fig. 20-4. The traditional TEM mode adjusts the condensor lenses C1 and C2 to illuminate the sample” to “Consider first the illumination system. The traditional TEM mode adjusts two condensor lenses to illuminate the sample”…
2. In Fig. 20-1(a), the “N” in “Nc … Nw … Na” should be “φ” …check font I think the one used here is different than the one used in the text.
3. Fig. 20-2 needs to be corrected. The drawing given as c) is actually the second part of b). The drawing for c) was omitted.
4. In Fig. 20-6(b), the angle symbol should replace “g” in “g R1 , R2 = 46º” and in “g R1 , R3 = 91º”. Also the left-most spot index should have bars over both both numeral “one”s.
5. Throughout the chapter capital cursive “S” should be replaced with lower case cursive “s”.
6. P. 587 line above Eq. 20-7 should be “length” instead of “inverse length”.
Appendices:
1. p. 600 top line eqn and the eqn below that: ital terms should be bold.
2. P. 601, un-numbered equation on the last line: bold “H” should be ital. Also in Fig. A1-3, a1, a2, a3 and b3 should all be bold.
3. P. 611, “Fig. 1-19(c )” should be “Fig. 7-5(c )”
4. Appendix A3-1, p. 619, a starting paren “(“ should be inserted in front of “cos2 α” in the numerator of the rhombohedral equation.
5. Appendix A3-2, Rhombohedral cell volume: inside the square root, the second of the two exponents is printed wrong and the formula should include 1 - 3cos2 α + 2cos3 α .
6. Appendix 15, Physical Constants, p. 642, the reduced Planck’s constant h bar, ħ, is really just h.
Problem solutions:
1. 12-1. Should be “13” and not “B”.
2. Watch out for numbering of problems in Chapter 10. In one version of 3rd Ed., 10-4 should be 10-6.
