Chapter 2:

1. p. 80 or nearby: Table 4-2 was not printed. It comes directly from the table on p. 75 of the 2^nd Ed.

2. Figure 2-15 (b) vector [ 1 -1 0] should be [ -1 -1 0]

Chapter 4:

1. pp. 129, 160, 161, “Appendix 12” should be “Appendix 10”.

2. p. 139, an exponent is missing in the 4^th equation, which should read F² = 4f² rather than F = 4f² .

3. p. 141, third equation from the bottom “-“ should be “+”.

4. P. 145, 160, “Appendix 13” should be “Appendix 11”.

5. P. 149, 160, “Appendix 14” should be “Appendix 12”.

6. P. 156, “Appendix 15” should be “Appendix 13”.

7. P. 159 in Remarks, Column 2: various printings refer to “Appendix 10” or “Appendix 19” which should be “Appendix 9”.

8. p. 165, problem 4-1, , 165, “Appendix 10” should be “Appendix 9”.

9. Table 4-2 the first few numbers in column 8 are wrong due to bad interpolation. 22.1 should be 20.1

Chapter 5:

1. p. 170, “Sec. 6-4” should be “Sec. 6-3”.

2. Fig. 5-3, Eq. 5-5 through 5-8 and in text thereabouts The capital cursive “S” should be replaced with a lower case cursive “s”.

3. Ref to “Fig 6-15” should be to “Fig. 6-16”.

4. P.202 caption of Fig 6-16: “Sec 6-10” should be “Sec. 6-9”.

5. P. 210, end of thrid para. “Sec 6-10” should be “Sec. 6-9”.

Chapter 7:

1. p. 243, 4 lines up from Eq. 7-5, “4θ K” should be “4θ_K”.

2. Fig. 7-12 is incorrect and needs to be replaced.

Chapter 9:

Because there are no vertical bars on Fig. 9-2, on p. 286

1. 8^th and 9^th lines from the top should be changed from: “peaks which cannot be resolved. The vertical bars on the plot indicate the peaks the diffractometer software has identified, but overmuch reliance on these types of rou-“ to: ““peaks which cannot be resolved. 2. line 12: replace “appear to have been” with “were”.

3. line 14, replace “have been” with “were”.

Chapter 10:

1. p. 318, on the images of Fig. 10-6 ital. numeral “8” should be ital. Letter “s”.

2. Fig. 10-9 is incorrect. It should be replaced by Fig. 13-6 from the 2^nd Ed.

3. There should be an asterisk before Problem 10-8.

4. p. 311 eqn. 6.46 at bottom of page – should be cubed, not squared.

5. At end of chapter, two problems are numbered 10-7 and two are numbered 10-8 but all are different. In various versions of 3^rd Ed., problems are numbered differently. 10-6 is not the same problem in all printings of 3^rd Ed.

6. In the second problem 10-8, AuCu2 should be AuCu3.

7. One of the problems 10-8 is missing a value of sin^2(Theta), equal to .0988, between .0913 and .1645.

Chapter 12:

1. p. 353, bottom line “Fig 4-22” should be “Fig. 4-21”.

Chapter 13:

1. In Table 13.2 a row of data is missing for peak 8, hkl=201, α=4, γ=1

Chapter 14:

1. P. 401 Greek beta in eq. Should be replaced by ital lower case “B”.

2. Fig. 14-18 change “δ” to “N” and “α” to “χ”.

Chapter 15:

1. Fig. 15-7 change “Q” to “ψ”.

1. p. 450, line below Eq (15-19a): a₂ should have been written as the difference between the two strain terms.

2. P. 452 Fig 15-9. The diffractometer circle and slits should intersect the focussing circle.

3. Eqn. 15-2, change ν to -ν

Chapter 16:

1. P. 449, in headings for columns “K_c” should be “K_e”. In the note a for the table reference to Eq 16-13 should be removed and the following definition for K₁ should be substituted: K₁ = K_e cot θ / ( 2 sin² ψ ) with ψ = 45 º.

2. P. 457, Fig. 16-3 was reproduced too small with 2D = 5.37 instead of 6.0 cm.

3. P. 486, Eq. 16-13 should be Eq. 16-4.

4. P. 489, Fig. 16-15 was reproduced too small (see previous line).

Chapter 17:

1. p.513, Eq. 5-5, the brackets are not correct as the quantity (H + s ) should be dotted with R_m.

2. p. 530, immediately after Eq. 17-7, the following text was omitted: “for the same conditions as Eq. 17-6. These equations can be modified…”

Chapter 19:

1. p. 562. Eq 19-15 should have “=” sign after “dV_r.”

2. In Sec. 19-5 Eq. 9-4 should be replaced with Eq. 19-4.

Chapter 20:

1. 2^nd para. Sec. 20-5: The first two lines of the para should be altered from “Consider first the illumination system shown at the top of Fig. 20-4. The traditional TEM mode adjusts the condensor lenses C1 and C2 to illuminate the sample” to “Consider first the illumination system. The traditional TEM mode adjusts two condensor lenses to illuminate the sample”…

2. In Fig. 20-1(a), the “N” in “N_c … N_w … N_a” should be “φ” …check font I think the one used here is different than the one used in the text.

3. Fig. 20-2 needs to be corrected. The drawing given as c) is actually the second part of b). The drawing for c) was omitted.

4. In Fig. 20-6(b), the angle symbol should replace “g” in “g R₁ , R₂ = 46º” and in “g R₁ , R₃ = 91º”. Also the left-most spot index should have bars over both both numeral “one”s.

5. Throughout the chapter capital cursive “S” should be replaced with lower case cursive “s”.

6. P. 587 line above Eq. 20-7 should be “length” instead of “inverse length”.

Appendices:

1. p. 600 top line eqn and the eqn below that: ital terms should be bold.

2. P. 601, un-numbered equation on the last line: bold “H” should be ital. Also in Fig. A1-3, a₁, a₂, a₃ and b₃ should all be bold.

3. P. 611, “Fig. 1-19(c )” should be “Fig. 7-5(c )”

4. Appendix A3-1, p. 619, a starting paren “(“ should be inserted in front of “cos² α” in the numerator of the rhombohedral equation.

5. Appendix A3-2, Rhombohedral cell volume: inside the square root, the second of the two exponents is printed wrong and the formula should include 1 - 3cos² α + 2cos³ α .

6. Appendix 15, Physical Constants, p. 642, the reduced Planck’s constant h bar, ħ, is really just h.

Problem solutions:

1. 12-1. Should be “13” and not “B”.

2. Watch out for numbering of problems in Chapter 10. In one version of 3^rd Ed., 10-4 should be 10-6.
