Homework problems due next Friday 3/19 are as follows: from chapter 5 problems 36, 57, 58, 64 and 67 plus the following extra problem E1: E1) A piece of steel with ultimate tensile strength 200 K psi is subject to the following standard indentation hardness tests: a) Brinell test with 3000 Kg load. b) Knoop test with 500 gram load. c) Vickers (DPH) test with 500 gram load. d) Rockwell C test with 150 Kg load. In each case calculate the expected diameter or depth of indentation, which ever is appropriate, in units of mm . Refer to the class web page for hardness conversion tables and related reference information. Be especially careful with the units. Note that Table 5.2 in the text contains an error. In the formula Rc = 100-500f for the Rockwell C test, the letter f should be replaced with t which is the depth of indentation in mm as shown in the diagram in that same table.
