Live Long & Prosper: The Class

Welcome              Syllabus              Lesson Plan                Resources

Have you ever wondered about humanity’s future?  What will we find beyond the stars?  Using Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game, Firefly, and Star Trek you will create your own colony on an extraterrestrial planet.  Paper organization and writing will help you create a coherent article about your colony.  In addition, we will travel to Mars and the Solar System at the Museum of Natural Science.

Although usually science and English do not appear in class together, this class aims to introduce a literature genre that deals with science in fun and interesting ways.  First, the students will go to HMNS and do labs to explore life’s survival needs.  During this phase, they will also read Ender’s Game so that they can see how authors use science in fiction as well as science fiction’s emphasis on identity (individual, cultural, and planetary).  Then they will apply their knowledge to a creative writing project that asks them to create their own colonies on made up planets.  At the end of the course, each student will understand how to use questions to better understand a text.
