Mini Baja is an intercollegiate engineering design competition for undergraduate and graduate engineering students. Students are organized into teams that are to design and build a prototype of a four-wheel, single seat, off-road recreational vehicle intended for sale to the non-professional weekend off-road enthusiast. The vehicle must be safe, easily transported, easily maintained and fun to drive while negotiating rough terrain without damage. Each team is competing to have its design accepted for manufacture by a fictitious firm, producing a volume of four thousand units per year at a cost of less than $2500 each including material, labor, overhead and tooling. To win the contact from the manufacturer it is necessary to design, build, test, promote and race the vehicle within the limits of the rules and generate financial support for the project.

There are three annual Mini Baja competitions: Mini Baja East, Mini Baja Midwest and Mini Baja West. Individual events which make up these competitions as well as their judging and scoring procedures differ significantly. Teams planning to enter more than one competition should consider the requirements of each in the design and construction of their vehicle.

This project has been very popular for many years at Rice. It requires dedication, interest, enthusiasm and many hours of work. For further information and the latest rules .
