Configuring your home computer
You can get good information about this from
Information Technology. However there are some things they do
not tell you.
-
You will not be able to use telnet to use MATLAB on
owlnet remotely
from your home computer. Instead you will need Mac
X if you use a Mac or X-Win32
if you use a PC. Rice has University wide site licenses for both
of these.
Copies can be obtained from the Consulting Center (Mudd 103).
-
There is a charge of $10 for X Win32. You should bring 3
floppy discs,
or be willing to buy three discs. You can also download a
demo copy from
the manufacturer Starnet.
You should be aware that demo copies typically expire
after some period
of time. More information can be found at the Starnet Home Page.
-
There is no charge for Mac X. Ask for instructions
at the Consulting Center (Mudd 103). You may be able to buy a newer
edition directly from Apple by calling 1-800-800-2775.
-
DFIELD and
PPLANE
can be downloaded. This is not necessary, or even useful, unless you
are using your own
copy of MATLAB running on your own computer. If you are using MATLAB on
owlnet remotely from your home computer you will not need these
files.
-
You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader in this course.
- You will probably want Ghostscript and associated viewers in
order to able to read and print postscript documents. This is an
invaluable piece of software.
