SYLLABUS

Goals and Objectives:

1. To examine the root causes of racism and to become more aware of racism as it bas been manifested in our history and in our personal lives.
2. Examine the ways in which people have been conditioned to participate in racism, both as a perpetrator and as a victim.
3. To cultivate an environment in which dialogue and practice may lead students to action as healers of racism in our society.

Week 3: Feb 8 Unaware Racism: we've all been infected.
Week 4: Feb 15Internalized Racism

Week 6: Feb 29Stereotypes and how they affect us. documentary Ethnic Notions
Week 7: Mar 14Institutionalized Racism in the systems that affect us daily: the media, the justice system, the educational system, the healthcare system, the economic system. True Colors
Week 8: Mar 21Oneness of humanity: Achieving unity and preserving diversity.
Week 9: Mar 28Ally building as a way to heal: an individual commitment. (end of workshop)
Week 10: Apr 4 Student presentations
Week 11: Apr 11 Student presentations
Week 12: Apr 18 Wrap up discussion: What we can do on campus and beyond the Rice community to heal racism (facilitated by Cathi Clack, from the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Rice)
