Research Interests

My research interests include Surface Enhanced Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy (SEIRA)
and Surface Enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of molecules coated on Nanoshells.

Nanoshells are hetero nanostructures consisting of a dielectric core and a thin metal shell.
Fabrication of Nanoshells using Silica as core and Gold (Au) as metallic shell has largely
been developed from the field of chemistry. The core-shell structure provides high tunability
of the localized Plasmon resonances of these heterostructures. The Nanoshell Plasmon
resonances are tunable from Visible to Mid IR. These discrete plasmon resonances largely
contribute to the surface enhancement by concentrating the incident electromagnetic radiation
thereby increasing the 'throughput' on the molecules close to nanoshell surface. Nanoshells have
been succesfully used as a SERS substrate and my current work involves developing nanoshells
as substrates for SEIRA.

Studying the fundamental plasmon resonant properties of IR nanoshells constitute an integral
part of research which necessitates electromagnetic theory and nanofabrication chemistry.
