Read both articles (by Fernie and Clark)
The purpose of both readings is to explore how
medieval people in general and Suger in particular understood the past. How was the past integrated into the
architecture of the present (Suger's church of Saint-Denis).
Reading 1
Questions to address in presentations:
1. How did Suger view the past?
2. Who designed the building--the
architect or the patron?
3. How did Suger describe the changes he
made to the church?
4. How does Ferni reconstruct the
elevation of Suger's church? What
is his evidence?
Reading 2
Questions to address in presentation:
1. How does Suger church relate
dimensionally and proportionally to the earlier structures?
2. What spolia do we find at Saint-Denis?
3. What forms in the new church were
imitations of "old" forms?
4. What meaning does Clark give to these
references to past architecture?
