You should all read the article by Roland Mainstone and divide up the material for presentation. He groups his material under several headings that you could use.
Different people could discuss the following topics:
a reconstruction of liturgical furniture
a reconstruction of the imperial space at the Hagia Sophia
a discussion of liturgy in Constantinople in the sixth century
a discussion of the participation of the emperor in the Eucharistic ceremony
The impact of the scale and setting of the architecture on the use and experience of
the space
what would be the symbolic significance of the emperors participation in the liturgy
(not discussed by Mainstone but your own conclusions based on his
analysis of the ceremony)
With each presentation be sure to cite the evidence he uses. Do you think this is sufficient evidence to draw the same conclusions?, Use the images in class to illustrate your points. If you are discussing a procession for example, illustrate it with movement through a floor plan.
You should aim at conveying the nature of the performative space of the Hagia Sophia, what did it look like, who was in each space, what did they do, how did processions unfold, and what role did both the patriarch and emperor play?
End your presentation with a discussion of the relationship between architectural form and symbolic and practical function).
I will have the images available to you in class on Friday. (see attached images)
