and photographic image in documentaries.

three things: 1) Find a phrase, sentence, or paragraph that is especially
striking: beautiful, funny, absurd, shocking, or deeply true. 2) Think
of a question about Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. 3) Jot down your
phrase and question on a sheet of paper and hand it in.
In-class writing assignment:
describe the image on page 9 (of the fireplace, wall, assorted objects)
Compare what you have written
to the passage on pp. 162-165. How would you describe Agee's prose here?
Is it objective or subjective? What is he trying to show? What details
does he select (color, texture, etc)?
Discussion of photograph and
passage: Is the "altar" art? Is it "a great tragic poem"?
Dismiss class around 8:30
so that project groups can meet; scanning and digital camera lab originally
scheduled for tonight will be held next week at around 9:00 p.m.
