Next class: review of group projects. More or less complete drafts are due;
if there are places where you need to fill in content, indicate that with
temporary placeholders. During class, each group will review work done by
the other three groups and offer constructive feedback. By 6 p.m. next Wednesday,
place the content of your documentary (HTML pages, images, etc) in your project
team's directory (beerbike, soular, lacarafe, or 2am) within the projects
folder. Remember, to transfer files to that folder, you will need to open
up SSH secure shell (or fetch), connect to gg.owlnet.rice.edu using your owlnet
userid and password, then go to the operations folder, choose go to /net/course-a/hans320/public_html/projects/name_of_your_project.
If you need to transfer audio or video files, please see me for assistance.
Don't hesitate to ask me for help--but you may want to give me a call or send
me an email to make sure that I'll be in the office.
Extension for due date for final projects: Monday, December 17 by 5 p.m.
Next week you will receive forms which you will use to evaluate the work you
and your fellow group members have done on the project. These forms will be
due along with the project on December 17.
Today's class: Understanding Digital
Documentaries
Activity 1: Brainstorming:
How do we define new media? What are the features
of new media? What are the advantages and disadvantages of new media?
Activity 2: Group work: Defining the criteria for evaluating digital documentaries.
Please divide into groups of 3-4. Your task is to define 5 or 6 criteria
for successful digital documentaries--both what to do and what to avoid.
Consider design, content, organization, use of different types of media,
storytelling, etc. Back up your criteria with specific examples drawn
from the digital documentaries we've looked at in this
class--particularly Indivisible (http://www.indivisible.org/home.htm)
and aka kurdistan (http://www.akakurdistan.com/).
Consider what standards you would like applied to your digital
documentaries. After about 15 minutes, you'll report out to the larger
group.
