Announcements
05/03: The finals have been graded. If you would like to discuss the final or any other aspects of the class with me, you can come by on Monday 5/5 or Tuesday 5/6. Please email me to schedule a time. I have really enjoyed teaching this class this semester. Best wishes to all of you in all your endeavors.
04/26: There will be a review session tomorrow, Sunday 4/27, from 4-7 pm. I will try to have it in the normal classroom. If that room is unavailable, I will put a note on the door with the new location.
04/23: The last homework set has been graded. I will leave them in a box outside my office if you would like to pick them up.
04/22:
Here are the final review sheet solutions. Let me know if you find an error.
04/18: One more change to the final review sheet: In #9, just consider the portion of the curves in the first quadrant (where x and y are both positive).
04/18: The final is 9 am-noon Monday April 28 in DH 1070. If you have a conflict with that time, please contact me as soon as possible so we can make other arrangements.
04/17: The
final review sheet is here. The graphs are not included in the online version, but they will be in the version I hand out in class. One change: on #18, just find the first derivative. There's nothing wrong with finding the second derivative, but it's really a pain.
04/16:
Here is one solution for the challenge problem due today. There were a lot of ways to do this, and everyone who submitted it did it differently.
04/15: The homework due this Friday is the last required homework for the semester. An optional assignment has been added to the homework page. It will be due 4/23, the last day of class. Any points you earn on it will be added directly to your homework grade (before averaging), so you should turn it in even if you only complete part of it.
04/14: The solution to the worksheet you handed in on Friday is
here.
04/14: The help session this week will be held on Tuesday from 7-9 instead of Wednesday from 7-9 in the normal room. In addition, I will have an extra office hour Thursday from 5:30-6:30 in case you are unable to attend the help session.
04/09:
Test 2 and
solutions are now online. A note about grades: If you have earned points on challenge problems since the last test, I have added them to your test 1 grade instead of your test 2 grade because they will help you more that way (they will be worth 1/90 instead of 1/135).
04/07: I wrote a false statement on the board in class. If you divide the equation sin^2x+cos^2x=1 by cos^2x, you obtain the equation tan^2x+1=sec^2x. That fact will help you with #29 in section 6.2. (Note:^2 means "squared")
04/02: I have handed back the test. You are encouraged to turn in test corrections on Wednesday April 9 by 3 pm. The rules: You must work independently. You may use your book, and you may ask me questions, but you may not talk to others about it. You will earn back half of the points you make up on corrections. I will have normal office hours on Monday from 2:30 to 3:30 and special office hours on Tuesday from 11 am-3 pm. I would love for you to come by and talk to me.
03/31: There will be no help session this Wednesday, April 2. Have a nice spring recess!
03/27: The
practice test solutions are up! Please print your own if you want to have them with you in class tomorrow. If you spot an error, please let me know.
03/25:
Practice Test 2 is up. I will post solutions on Thursday. Unless any of you have conflicts, the test will start at 8:40 am on Monday, March 31. Although I did not on the practice test, I will provide graph paper for the graphing questions for the real test. (Note: I made several small changes in the practice test in the first four hours after posting it. If you downloaded it between noon and 4 on Tuesday, you should download it again to make sure you have the final version.)
03/24: I will not be in my office from 2:30-3:30 today. Instead, I will be there from 1-2.
03/19: Friday will be a review day. Come with questions over anything we have covered so far (or the Houston Rockets), espcially old or current homework questions. It is possible that brownies will be provided. Note: We do NOT have a test on Monday. I just want to give you a chance to ask questions. The test will be March 31, and I will hand out a practice test next week.
03/01: I will not have office hours on 03/10. Instead, I will have an office hour from 3-4 on Wednesday 03/12.
02/21: If you need or want some algebra review, try
Schaum's Outline of College Algebra. It is pretty cheap ($12 or less) on Amazon.com, but you can also access it for free as an electronic book through the Rice library website. Let me know if you need help finding it.
02/20: In the rod around the corner example in class, we only found the angle and not the length of the rod! Just so you don't lose sleep over it, to find the length, just plug in 0.90 rad into the initial formula for the length. You will get about 8.32 meters. If you do the challenge problem, make sure you do this part too.
02/18: I handed back the tests today. If you were not in class, you can come to my office and pick them up. Come to my office hours or arrange another time to meet with me if you would like to discuss the test. Each question was worth 10 points (problem 1 had three parts, each of which was worth 10 points, and problem 6 had two parts, each of which was 5 points), and the bonus was 2 points. If you turned in challenge problems, those points should have been added to your grade.
2/15: New homework policy: Turn in your homework by 3 pm the day it is due. Absolutely no late work will be accepted.
02/13:

Information and tips for the test. Good luck!
02/07: The
practice test solutions are up! Please print your own if you want to have them with you in class tomorrow.
02/07: I have made minor changes (in bold) to problems 7, 10, and 11 on the practice test.
02/04:
Practice Test 1 is up. I will post solutions on Thursday.
02/04: You can turn in the homework due Friday February 8 on Monday February 11 before the test if you would like to have it to study over the weekend.
02/01:
Here is the solution to challege problem 3.
02/01: You can pick up old homework in my office if you didn't get it in class.
01/30: I have changed the way homework will be assigned. Homework will still be due once a week on Fridays, but I will assign problems every day. You can get them in class or at the homework link above.
01/25: I have started giving challenge problems in class.
Terms and conditions.
01/16: You have the option of turning in the section 2.3 homework next week instead of this week. Please write "2.3 included" or "no 2.3" so I can separate them easily. I have also made changes to the schedule posted above.
