Rice’s Committee on Teaching awarded Professor D. Michael Lindsay a Brown Teaching Grant award for his proposal, “Engaging Rice Students in the World of Ideas.”
The funds will enable students in Professor Lindsay’s "From Harvard to Hollywood: Religion in American Life" seminar to participate in broad-ranging conversations about the relevance of religion to politics, business, and other social arenas. During the fall semester of 2008, the course will host several religious leaders from the local community. These leaders will offer their expertise through stimulating, intellectual conversation with seminar participants.
By creating an environment reminiscent of the intellectual salons of seventeenth-century Paris, these class meetings will provide students the opportunity to practice the art of engaging scholarly materials through discussion and intelligent conversation. The innovative program is part of a larger aim of the Rice sociology department—to provide world-class learning opportunities for Rice undergraduates.
