Using KaleidaGraph
Making an x-y plot
After entering x-data in one column of a worksheet table and the matching y-data in another column, go to Gallery and choose Line or Scatter plot. In the dialog box, identify the columns to be used as x and y coordinates.
Altering an x-y plot
If you want to add or delete columns of data from a plot, click in the plot window to make it active, and then select Gallery and the type of plot you’re using (Line or Scatter). The dialog box will show all columns on the corresponding data sheet, and you can just mark all the ones to be plotted. Then hit Replot to see the revised graph.
Formatting your graph
Axis ranges and tic mark intervals can be chosen after double clicking on an axis. The text used for the graph title and labels for axes and tics can be formatted after double clicking on the item to be changed.
To select the size, color, and style of data points and lines, double click on the corresponding symbol in the graph’s legend box and make your choices in the dialog box that appears.
The size of the printed graph can be specified precisely under Plot, Set Plot Size. You can also move and re-size the frame with the mouse.
Linear Least-squares Fitting
Under Curve Fit, select Linear. Check the Column Name box for the data you wish to fit and then hit OK. The fit line will be drawn on your graph. Some options are available under Format, Curve Fit Options. Here you can constrain the fit to go through the origin of the graph and make the fit line extend across the entire frame of the plot.
To see the best fit line’s equation, under Plot, select Display Equation. The fit parameters will then be shown in the plot frame.
Fitting a portion of a data set
Kaleidagraph does not seem to allow you to fit a portion of a curve while viewing the full set of points. However, you can easily copy the full set of data into another column of the worksheet (select a column, hit Copy, then Paste to an empty column) and then either delete the unwanted points from the new column or mask them (using Function, Mask while the worksheet is visible). A fit to the selected data then just requires specifying the appropriate column. Note that you can plot several columns on one graph and thereby see the full data set along with partial fits.
Printing
When you select File, Print, you will invoke an Owlnet print dialog box. If you don’t have a printing account yet, just hit the Help button and follow the instructions to get a printing password that will let you login to the Owlnet printing handler and make hard copies on the laser printers in rooms BH 212 and 214.
