Background

The main applicable equations, for this problem are the generalized Fick equations, defined, here, in terms of the phenomenological properties (transport properties) and transport coefficients of the species.

                               (24.2-3)

From this equation, one can see that there are four contributions to the mass-flux vector: The concentration diffusion term, the pressure diffusion term, the forced diffusion term, and the thermal diffusion term.

For the binary diffusion case, in gases or liquids, which is one of the most common, the mass-flux vector is equal to:

         (24.2-10)

This problem will focus on the use of the pressure diffusion term of this equation at steady state.
