Final Project - Midterm 2001 Problem
2
Matthew Winslow and Bonnie Woo
In many industrial processes it is necessary to
transport fluids at high temperatures through pipes. These pipes
require considerable insulation to prevent heat losses. Insulations
able to withstand higher temperatures cost more. Problem #2 presents
an example of insulation usage in industry. The problem is as originally
stated, with comericialy available insulation and their thermal conductivity
values substituted for the original values. The cheaper grade insulation
used in the problem is a perlite/sodium silicate composite from The
Schundler Company, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 350 C.
The more expensive insulation used is an alumina-silica blanket type ASB-2600
from Zircar.
