The summer program is an intensive 10-week internship at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas. Juniors and highly qualified sophomores majoring in bioengineering may apply. The program is designed to provide bioengineering undergraduates with first-hand experience in clinical medicine and interdisciplinary research. Under direct supervision of faculty mentors, students will participate in a rigorous program that includes an 80-hour anatomy course taght by Dr. Kathryn Peek, a daily clinical rotations, laboratory research, lectures, and leadership training. During the course of the program the students will write a research plan, conduct biomedical research, write an abstract, and present their results. In addition, students will become certified in CPR and advance first aid, and will participate in the Survey of Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE), an HHMI program collaborative.
Schedule: The program will run for 10 weeks and begins at 6:30 AM daily. Availability for some evening and weekend hours is expected. AL students will be required to live in Rice dorms.

- Communication and leadership skills
Students will participate in clinical rotations that include:
- General surgery
- Pediatrics
- Labor and Delivery
- Emergency room
- Intensive Care Unit
- Internal Medicine
