The purpose of this tutorial on Romanesque and Gothic Architecture is:

  1. To become familiar with the technical, structural, and formal characteristics of Romanesque and Gothic architecture as represented by the buildings of Saint-Sernin at Toulouse and Amiens Cathedral.
  2. To develop a precise descriptive architectural vocabulary for Romanesque and Gothic architectures. All words in bold type are found in the glossary which can be reached by clicking on the term.
  3. To relate the form of Saint-Sernin to its function as a 12th century pilgrimage church and to relate the form of Amiens to its function as a 13th century urban cathedral.

The following materials will guide your viewing and understanding of the differences and similarities between Gothic and the Romanesque architectural styles. In each section, a different aspect will be examined with specific comparisons given between two important examples, Saint-Sernin at Toulouse and Amiens Cathedral.
