The purpose of this tutorial on Romanesque and Gothic Architecture
is:
- To become familiar with the technical, structural, and formal
characteristics of Romanesque and Gothic architecture as
represented by the buildings of Saint-Sernin at Toulouse and
Amiens Cathedral.
- To develop a precise descriptive architectural vocabulary for
Romanesque and Gothic architectures. All words in bold type are
found in the glossary which can be reached by clicking on the
term.
- To relate the form of Saint-Sernin to its function as a 12th
century pilgrimage church and to relate the form of Amiens to its
function as a 13th century urban cathedral.
The following materials will guide your viewing and understanding
of the differences and similarities between Gothic and the Romanesque
architectural styles. In each section, a different aspect will be
examined with specific comparisons given between two important
examples, Saint-Sernin at Toulouse and Amiens Cathedral.
