Arkabandhu Chowdhury, Constructing a Probabilistic Knowledge-Based System in Healthcare

Medical diagnosis always involves risks like side-effects of a certain medication on a particular set of patients, overdose or under-dose of medications, wrong treatment due to similar kind of symptoms in patients, etc. In order to minimize these risks in an automated way, an effective way is to construct a knowledge-based system (KBS) which enables the doctors to analyse the risks beforehand through compilation and sharing of medical information. A knowledge-based system is a software that uses Artificial Intelligence or expert system techniques in problem solving processes. It incorporates a store (database) of expert knowledge designed to facilitate its retrieval in response to specific queries, or to transfer expertise. In order to build our healthcare KBS, we are using a recently developed Machine Learning technique, called Distant Supervision for relation extraction from a bibliographic database of medical journals.
