Rice University - CENG 403 - Starting Aspen/Saving Files

How to Start Aspen

You may execute Aspen from most of the workstations at Rice. To do so, type "aplus" in an X-term (Unix window). It will take a about thirty seconds for the Aspen window to load. At that time, Aspen will ask you if you wish to load the program on the current node; you should answer yes. After the simulation engine has loaded, Aspen will want to know if you want to start a new file or edit an old one. If you ask Aspen to load an existing file, a window will appear which allows you to sift through your directories until you find the file that you want. If you start a new file, Aspen will ask you what you units you would to use in your model. For CENG 403, "General with Metric Units" will be appropriate.

Saving Files in Aspen

To save a file in Aspen, select "Save As" from the "File" menu on Aspen's main window. You should -->ALWAYS<-- save your files using the "Backup Format" as opposed to the "Quick Restart Format." Aspen has been known to incorrectly save "Quick Restart" files such that the data is lost. Be careful.
